Where is SteelForge located?

SteelForge operates from a 50,000 sq.ft industrial facility at Forge Road, Sheffield S9 2PR, United Kingdom. Our manufacturing plant houses dedicated zones for fabrication, CNC machining, welding, metal processing, quality inspection, and engineering design.

How quickly can I get a quotation?

We aim to provide detailed quotations within 24–48 business hours for most enquiries. Complex projects requiring extensive engineering review may take slightly longer, but we will always acknowledge your enquiry within 24 hours and provide an estimated response time.

Do you offer site installation and on-site services?

Yes, we provide full turnkey solutions including on-site welding, installation, inspection, and commissioning. Our site teams are CSCS-qualified and fully insured for site operations across the UK and Europe.

Steel Fabrication

What steel grades do you commonly fabricate?

We fabricate all common structural grades including S235, S275, S355, S460, and S690. We also work with stainless steels (304, 316L, Duplex 2205), weathering steels (Corten), pressure vessel grades (P265GH, P355NL), and abrasion-resistant steels (Hardox). All material is sourced from approved mills with full traceability.

Do you provide CE/UKCA marking for structural steelwork?

Yes. We are certified to EN 1090-1 Execution Class 4 (the highest level) and can provide full CE and UKCA marking for all structural steelwork. This includes a Declaration of Performance, welding certificates, material traceability, and NDT records as standard.

What are your typical lead times for fabrication?

Typical structural steel packages (50–200 tonnes) are fabricated within 6–10 weeks from drawing approval. Smaller urgent projects can be prioritised with lead times as short as 2–3 weeks. We always provide a detailed programme schedule with your quotation.

Can you handle both design and fabrication?

Absolutely. Our in-house engineering team can take your concept through detailed design, 3D modelling (Tekla/Revit), connection design, and fabrication drawings. We offer a full design-and-build service, or we can work from your fully engineered drawings.

CNC Machining

What tolerances can you achieve?

Our standard machining tolerance is ±0.05mm, with achievable tolerances down to ±0.01mm on critical features. For Wire EDM, we can hold ±0.005mm. All tolerances are verified using calibrated Zeiss CMM equipment with full dimensional reports.

Do you offer prototyping as well as production?

Absolutely. We provide rapid prototyping services with lead times as short as 3 working days. Our engineers will review your CAD model and provide design-for-manufacture feedback to optimise the part for production. Once approved, we seamlessly transition to full production runs.

What file formats do you accept for CNC machining?

We accept all common CAD formats including STEP (.stp), IGES (.iges), Parasolid (.x_t), and native files from SolidWorks, Inventor, and Fusion 360. A fully dimensioned PDF drawing is also helpful. Our CAM team programmes directly from your 3D model.

What materials can you machine?

We machine a wide range of materials including aluminium alloys (6082, 7075), stainless steels (303, 316L), titanium alloys (Ti6Al4V), carbon and alloy steels (S275, EN24T), engineering plastics (PEEK, Acetal), and copper/brass alloys.

Industrial Welding

What welding codes do you work to?

We weld to all major international codes including ASME IX, AWS D1.1, ISO 9606, EN 287/EN ISO 9606, and EN 1090. Our welding engineers can develop project-specific WPS and qualify welders to any recognised standard required by your specification.

Do you provide NDT and documentation for welds?

Yes, we offer a complete range of NDT services in-house: ultrasonic testing (UT), radiographic testing (RT), magnetic particle inspection (MT), and dye penetrant testing (PT). Every project receives a full documentation pack including WPS, WPQ, material certificates, NDT reports, and as-built records.

Can you handle site welding projects?

Absolutely. We have mobile welding teams equipped for on-site installation, repair, and modification welding. Our site welders carry the same coding qualifications as our shop team and are fully insured for site operations anywhere in the UK and Europe.

Do you offer post-weld heat treatment (PWHT)?

Yes, we provide on-site post-weld heat treatment for stress relief and hydrogen bake-out. Our heat treatment equipment includes electric resistance heating elements and temperature controllers with full chart recording to demonstrate compliance with your specified procedure.

Metal Processing

What is the maximum thickness you can laser cut?

Our 12kW fibre laser can cut carbon steel up to 30mm thick, stainless steel up to 25mm, and aluminium up to 20mm. For thicker materials, we offer plasma cutting up to 150mm. We'll advise on the most suitable process for your material and thickness.

Can you form complex shapes with multiple bends?

Absolutely. Our CNC press brakes are programmed with multi-step bending sequences and can produce complex profiles with multiple angles and tight tolerances. We can also supply tooling for specialist profiles. Send us your drawing for a feasibility review.

Do you offer surface treatment and coating?

Yes, we provide in-house shot blasting to SA 2.5, wet painting, powder coating, and can arrange hot-dip galvanizing through our approved partners. We offer full corrosion protection systems suitable for environments from C1 (interior) to C5 (offshore/industrial).

Do you process customer-supplied material?

Yes, we can process free-issue material. All customer-supplied material is inspected on receipt for condition and compliance before processing begins. We can also source material on your behalf with full mill certification if preferred.

Quality Inspection

What NDT certifications do your inspectors hold?

Our inspectors are certified to PCN (Personnel Certification in Non-Destructive Testing) Level 2 and 3, ASNT Level II and III, and we have in-house PCN Level 3 supervisors for procedure development and audit. All certifications are kept current and available for review.

Can you provide inspection on customer sites?

Absolutely. We operate both in our dedicated inspection laboratory and on-site at customer premises. Our mobile inspection kits include portable UT, MT, PT, PMI, and hardness testing equipment. We can deploy qualified inspectors anywhere in the UK and Europe.

What documentation do I receive after inspection?

You receive a comprehensive inspection report package including: test method statement, equipment calibration certificates, inspector qualifications, detailed results with accept/reject criteria, and a certificate of conformity. For dimensional inspection, we provide ballooned drawings and full measurement data.

Do you offer First Article Inspection (FAIR) services?

Yes, we provide full FAIR services to AS9102 (aerospace) and ISO 9001 standards. This includes ballooned drawing creation, complete dimensional verification using CMM and manual methods, material and process certification review, and the official FAIR form completion.

Engineering Design

What design codes do you work to?

We design to all major international codes including Eurocodes (EC0, EC1, EC3), AISC 360, BS 5950, PD 5500 for pressure vessels, and ASME VIII. Our engineers are chartered with the Institution of Structural Engineers and Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Can you work from existing drawings or scanned data?

Absolutely. We can work from your existing 2D drawings, PDF sketches, or even hand-drawn concepts. We also offer 3D laser scanning services to capture as-built conditions for renovation and brownfield projects. Scanned data is converted directly into accurate 3D CAD models.

Do you provide calculation packages for building control?

Yes, we provide comprehensive design calculation packages suitable for building control submission and third-party checking. Our calculations are clear, well-documented, and include all assumptions, load take-downs, model descriptions, and code references.

What file formats do you deliver?

We deliver in whatever format you need: native CAD files (SolidWorks, Inventor, Tekla), neutral 3D formats (STEP, IGES, IFC), 2D drawings (DWG, DXF, PDF), and calculation reports (PDF). We also provide BIM-ready IFC files for integration with architectural and MEP models.
